Gearbox Rebuild (Spring 2007)
After looking at the gearbox with its wheels inside of other wheels, I decided that the rebuilding was best left to someone else. After doing some research on reputable pros with experience rebuilding the gearbox from my car, I decided to go with Sportscar Warehouse in Arlington, Texas. Not only did their mechanic have a hell of a lot of hours working on these things, but they were also local (which means I didn't have to concern myself with shipping, etc.) and had the abilitiy to bench test both the gearbox and the A-type Overdrive.

Here are the comments from the mechanic as found on the invoice:
  • Disassemble Transmission. Rebuild transmission with the parts listed.
  • Disassemble Overdrive. The overdrive was in a horrible state. The overdrive clutch assembly was ripped apart and had to replace. We had to use another drum. The entire overdrive had to be rebuilt.
The parts manifest includes:
  • Oil Seal, Pinion
  • Bush, Second Gear
  • Washer .132 Trans
  • Circlip
  • Thrust Washer, Overdrive
  • Circlip Retaining
  • Bearing
  • Circlip Mainshaft
  • Roller Bearing
  • Synchro Rings
  • Circlip, 3rd Gear
  • Needle Bearings Layshaft
  • Layshaft
  • Gasket Set
  • Front Seal
  • Rear Seal
  • Bush Clutch Shaft
  • Gasket Set Overdrive
  • O-Rings
  • O/D Roller Set
  • O/D Clutch Assembly
Now I have a shiny, newly rebuilt gearbox to go with my rebuilt engine and new clutch. This gives me a good amount of confidence that I've got a good thing going here and should be able to reliably drive the car for many, many years to come. Although I was confident in my ability to rebuild the engine myself, this just wasn't the case with the gearbox. After having more than one experienced gearhead advise me to let someone else do it, I decided to take that advice. Sure like what I see so far.
