The Early Years (1987 - 1988)
|
The known history of this car is one, sadly, of not being driven much. My mom purchased the car in the early-Winter of 1987 for around $1200.00 from a
man who was storing the car in our across-the-street neighbor's garage. From what I understand, the owner's wife was not happy with the car and they were looking to sell, mom was looking to buy, and so a deal was consumated.
At the time I was a junior at Duncanville High School (in Duncanville, Texas) and was naturally interested in convertable sports cars. (What red-blooded American
boy wouldn't be??) So, when mom bought the car the whole house was full of some excitement. We all just loved this fun little car!! As we began to drive it
we began to discover that owning and driving a (at that time) 24 year old car had it's ups and downs. However, from December 1987 to roughly June 1988 I got to drive
the car from time-to-time as mom would allow.
Some things never worked on the car; namely the A-Type Laycock overdrive unit and second gear. I vaguely remember something about the second gear synchonizer being out. I never knew what was wrong with the overdrive unit.
When we drove the car, we would run the gearbox way high in first gear, then shift DIRECTLY to third. It was also during this time that the one and only modification was made to the car.
Mom had Ferrari, yes Ferrari, tailpipes installed on the car. So, I might be the only guy in the world with Ferrari tailpipes on a Triumph TR4A.
From that moment on, I was hooked!!
